What should I look for when buying a fan heater?
Three things: the power (1,500 W for small rooms up to about 15 m², 2000 to 2,400 W for living room or bathroom), the noise level (for the bedroom a quiet DC unit such as the Dreo Atom 316 at 34 dB) and, for the bathroom absolutely, a protection rating (IP) as with the Rowenta IP21. Comfort features such as oscillation, timer and remote control are nice to have.
Can I use any fan heater in the bathroom?
No. In the bathroom, a fan heater needs a protection rating (IP class) because of the moisture. Only the Rowenta Instant Comfort Aqua in the comparison is splash- and drip-proof with IP21 and therefore bathroom-suitable (at a distance from the shower). The other appliances are meant for dry living spaces and do not belong in the bathroom. Also observe the installation zones in the bathroom.
How much power does a fan heater use?
A lot: fan heaters are among the biggest power consumers in the household. At 2000 watts, one hour of operation costs around 70 cents at about 35 ct/kWh (the German electricity price). They are therefore meant for short, targeted heating, not as permanent heating. A thermostat and an eco mode (for example on the Dreo) reduce consumption by heating only as much as necessary. More in the power consumption guide.
Which fan heater is quietest for the bedroom?
The Dreo Atom 316 at 34 dB: its brushless DC motor runs much more quietly than the AC fans of classic fan heaters. Together with eco mode and timer, it is ideal for the bedroom. Classic AC units (Brandson, TZS) are audible on the highest setting and better suited to the living room, where a little noise does not matter.
Ceramic fan heater or tower fan heater: which is better?
Both mostly use ceramic heating elements. A compact fan heater (Dreo, Brandson) heats one area in a targeted way and is cheaper and more mobile. A tower fan heater (De’Longhi HFX65V20) is slim, often has an oscillating base and distributes the warmth more evenly through the room, ideal for the living room but more expensive. Targeted and cheap → compact; whole room → tower.
