How much dehumidifying capacity (L/day) do I need?
That depends mainly on the room size: for a bedroom or a small flat up to about 20 m², 10 to 12 L/day is enough, for example the Pro Breeze 12L. For larger rooms up to 32 m² the Comfee 16L is right, for cellars or large areas up to 40 m² the TROTEC with 18 L. The quiet Peltier minis (350 to 500 ml/day) are only meant for individual small zones such as the bathroom or a wardrobe.
Compressor or Peltier mini: which is better?
These are two different classes of appliance. Compressor dehumidifiers (Pro Breeze 12L, Comfee, TROTEC, Klarstein) draw 12 to 20 litres per day and are the real answer to mould in flat and cellar, but audible and heavier. Peltier minis (Pro Breeze Mini, Jialexin) are whisper-quiet and cheap, but manage only 350 to 500 ml/day and lose a lot of effectiveness in the cold. Rule of thumb: against mould and in large or cold rooms, a compressor; for the quiet bedroom or small bathroom, a Peltier mini.
Does a dehumidifier really help against mould?
Yes, because it tackles the cause: mould only germinates from a relative humidity of about 60%. A dehumidifier with a humidistat keeps the humidity permanently at 50 to 55% and so takes away the mould's basis for life. What matters is the right capacity for the room; a mini that is too weak in a large, damp cellar achieves little. For acute damp problems, a compressor unit with 12 to 20 L/day is the right choice.
Which dehumidifier is quiet enough for the bedroom?
The quietest are the Peltier minis such as the Pro Breeze Mini: they work without a compressor and are barely audible at night. Among the powerful compressor units, the Pro Breeze 12L with its 38 dB sleep mode is the best choice. Units with 46 to 48 dB (Klarstein, TROTEC), on the other hand, are too loud for continuous night-time operation in the bedroom.
How much does a dehumidifier cost in electricity?
Compressor units draw 220 to 440 watts, but thanks to the humidistat run only when humidity is too high; realistically that is roughly €0.15 to €0.40 per operating hour, depending on model and mode. The Peltier minis are much more economical at 40 to 72 watts, but also draw much less water. Via the humidistat and a timer (for example on the Comfee or Jialexin), consumption can be limited in a targeted way.
